What if eliminating child labour starts by looking beyond child labour itself? Drawing on recent global consultations and lessons from a decade of action, this article explores the growing shift towards systems-based approaches that connect agriculture, education, livelihoods, social protection and labour rights to create lasting change for children and their communities.
In the field of child labour prevention, stories are often misunderstood. They are sometimes treated as communication assets, as testimonials, or as complementary material around programmes, reports or campaigns. A way to “humanise” data. A way to create visibility around an issue. But the role of stories in this work is much deeper than that.
Efforts to eliminate child labour are unfolding in a rapidly evolving financing landscape. As public development assistance comes under increasing pressure, private-sector funding linked to human rights due diligence is playing a growing role in sustaining progress toward SDG 8.7. The critical question is no longer whether companies engage, but how these investments can reinforce national systems, strengthen sector governance and support long-term prevention.
