Global Advocacy - ITGA

ECLT engagements with International Tobacco Growers Association

Engagement with tobacco farmers and their representative bodies is critical for the elimination of child labour in tobacco growing.

In 2023, the ECLT Foundation participated in ITGA meetings and events in Zimbabwe and Tanzania. During each of these gatherings, the Foundation was assigned a specific topic on child labour for presentation.

The presentations have generated intense debate on the importance of incorporating contextual factors and cultural nuances in understanding why child labour occurs in tobacco growing, and in designing effective ways to address it.

The collaboration between ECLT and ITGA has resulted in the creation of a child labour committee in ITGA. Enhancing collaboration with ITGA and its national affiliates continues to be a vital component of the ECLT advocacy strategy.
