One of the first projects supported by the ECLT Foundation has
been successfully completed.
The 2-year project has been implemented by the Association on
the Elimination of Child Labour in Malawi. Its objectives were:
- to provide
children with quality, accessible and affordable learning institutions
- to
raise awareness on the consequences of child labour and the
importance of education
The ECLT Foundation has commissioned Save
the Children Denmark to carry out an independent final evaluation
of the project.
This was done in June 2005 with a team composed by
representatives of
Save the Children Denmark and Save the Children Norway
(Zimbabwe office). The report has just come out with
the following conclusions:
- the school that has been built is of
a very high standard
- most of the former child labourers are now
attending school
- the project has been successful in mobilising
communities around the construction of the school
- the child labour
committees set up by the project have been efficient in
disseminating the information,
carrying
out inspections
and
monitoring child labour in the estates
- the
project has the potential to make a lasting impact.
