A member of the UN Global Compact (UNGC) since June 2015, the ECLT Foundation presents its outcomes for 2015-16. The Communication on Engagement (CoE) describes the ECLT Foundation’s strategic approach and activities that support the Global Compact and engage with the initiative at international, national, and local levels.
In 2015, two of ECLT’s largest ever projects ended. The Child Labour Elimination Actions for Real Change (CLEAR) and the Promoting Sustainable Practices to Eradicate Child Labour in Tobacco (PROSPER) were implemented between 2011 and 2015 in Malawi and Tanzania, respectively.
Human Rights Day marks the 2nd anniversary of the signing of the ECLT Pledge of Commitment and Minimum Standards by 13 companies, which make up a significant portion of the tobacco-growing supply chain, as well as the International Tobacco Growers' Association and the ECLT Foundation.
At the 2016 Forum on Business and Human Rights, The ECLT Foundation, along with the Permanent Missions to the UN of Canada and Malawi, hosted a side event on “Securing Multi-Stakeholder Commitments Towards Eliminating Child Labour” – the only event specifically addressing child labour or children’s issues during the Forum. It was an opportunity to contribute to the Human Rights Council’s greater body of knowledge - by sharing concrete examples of effective multi-stakeholder approaches in the fight against child labour in agriculture.
This event is designed to discuss real-life examples and benefit of on-going, multi-stakeholder dialogue to develop and implement policy towards the elimination of child labour.
The implementation phase of the current public-private partnership between the ECLT Foundation and the ILO, which started in December 2015, has made marked progress toward developing a global guidance on hazardous child labour and occupational safety and health in tobacco growing.
In the ever-changing global landscape, several new resources are available on child labour and youth employment.
2015 was a year of major gains for the ECLT Foundation. Through our work over the past year, the foundation has seen concrete results in our fight against child labour in tobacco growing.
The ECLT Foundation is pleased to announce that Marcus McKay was elected as the new ECLT Foundation Treasurer by the ECLT Foundation Board. The election took place on 6 April 2016 during the 35rd ECLT Foundation Board Meeting in Geneva.
