Collaboration with Mozambique to fight against child labour

Collaboration between the ECLT Foundation and the Government of Mozambique

Maputo, 27 June 2018. The ECLT Foundation and the Government of Mozambique joined forces to strengthen the fight against the worst forms of child labour, particularly in the areas where tobacco is grown. Over a 3-year period, the 2018 Memorandum of Understanding will focus on community education and training, awareness and communication, institutional capacity building and revising the legal framework on child labour.

Support to the families whose children are subjected to the worst forms of child labour in tobacco growing

Vitoria Dias Diogo, the Minster of labour, employment and social security, explained that “the MoU establishes that the families whose children are subjected to the worst forms of child labour in tobacco growing due to the lack of income, will be assisted”. ECLT Foundation has a strong commitment to fight child labour in Mozambique and has reached over 24,000 children, farmers and families in the Tete province since 2013.

David Hammond, the executive director of ECLT stated “As a father myself, I value all and efforts with work to ensure children have a childhood and access to educational facilities and curriculum that make a difference. (…) Today is not about problems but solutions. Solutions which can only come from collective action and multi-stakeholder intervention as outlined in the new Mozambique National Action Plan.”

National Action Plan against Child Labour

The coordinated efforts to implement the National Action Plan is one effective way to accelerate the eradication of the worst forms of child labour. The ECLT foundation strive to drive up standards of child welfare in communities of child labour in tobacco growing communities.

The ECLT Foundation looks forward to working with the government of Mozambique in forthcoming engagements to develop sustainable actions to eliminate child labour by addressing the root causes.
